On-Grid Solar System
In On grid solar system, solar panels will generate the DC electricity by absorbing sunlight and the solar inverter will convert the same DC electricity into AC electricity which can then be used directly at home or business.
If the system, the surplus is fed into the main electrical grid via solar net metering. At the time of electricity billing DISCOM will adjust the exported units in your electricity bill.
HOW DOES AN ON-GRID SYSTEM WORKS?
In an on-grid solar system, solar panels are connected with the solar inverter, which is connected to the grid through your electricity meter. The solar panel converts sunlight into DC electricity which is then converted into alternating current better known as AC power. This AC power is the standard electrical current used for powering most home appliances and luxuries throughout the world.
- During the day, if the solar system’s production exceeds the house’s electrical needs, the excess electricity is automatically fed into the power grid via “Net-Metering”.
- At night or anytime a household requires more electricity than the solar system is producing, then extra energy is pulled from the grid.
- Suppose your on-grid solar system produces 32 units in one day and you are using only 24 units at home, then the balance of 8 units will be sent to the DISCOM through net metering which results in savings in your electricity bills.
WHAT IS NET-METERING?
Net metering is a device that analyses and displays your grid exports and imports, like how much power is generated by solar, how much we consumed, and how much is exported to the grid. Your electricity bill will be calculated on above basis.
Net metering is also called as a bi-directional meter. This meter will keep tracking of a home’s total electrical consumption.

AREA REQUIRED:
Normally 70 sq ft area requires for 1 kW. Hence 70 sq ft multiplied by solar kW will give you how
much area required for solar system.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF ON-GRID SOLAR SYSTEM
ADVANTAGES:-
- Comparatively low cost compared to other solar systems.
- Save your electricity bill up 90%.
- Subsidy available up to 10 kW system.
- Export the excess solar power to electricity grid.
- No limitation of load as it runs all connected load with grid sharing.
- No battery bank required.
- ROI in 3 to 5 years.
DISADVANTAGES
- Does not works when grid is OFF.
- No power backup, as there is no battery.
SUBSIDY ON ON-GRID SOLAR SYSTEM
To promote solar power and to bring India ahead in the field of solar, the government is giving huge subsidy on solar. You can also take advantage of this subsidy scheme by installing an on grid solar system. The subsidy rates may vary as per your state solar policy. Contact your state nodal agency for more info.
Honest Advice:
“On grid solar system is generally recommended when you are installing a solar system of 4 –
5kW or greater capacity. This type of solar system is more beneficial for those who are troubled
by their heavy electricity bills of thousands of rupees and want to get rid of this by getting rid of
grid electricity.”
